Back Up a cPanel Account

Posted 03rd December, 2018

cPanel is a popular hosting control panel used by HostGator, Bluehost, GoDaddy, NameCheap and more. Added fixed.net backups can be done in a few seconds.

Backing up Website Files

  1. Ensure the website is added to fixed.net and navigate to the Website Dashboard
  2. Click the Backups tab
  3. Under File Backups click Configure File Backups
  4. If you have SSH enabled, you can choose SSH/SFTP.
    • The hostname should be yourdomain.com (whatever your domain name is)
    • Use your cPanel username and password
    • The port should be 22
    • The path should be /home/username/public_html. Replace username with your cPanel username. Do not click submit.
  5. To ensure a backup is successful, we can also add FTP credentials as follows:
    • The hostname is again yourdomain.com (whatever your domain name is)
    • Use your cPanel username and password
    • The port should be 21
    • The path can should be public_html
  6. Click Submit. You are now successfully backing up your website files.

Backing up Databases

These steps should be followed for every database you have added to cPanel.

  1. In cPanel click MySQL Databases.
  2. Add a MySQL Username. Make a note of the password.
  3. Assign the user to the database. For backups you require at least SELECT permissions, but restore functionality requires all permissions so we recommend ticking every box.
  4. Back on the cPanel dashboard click Remote Access under databases and add the IP addresses you see on the Backup Databases tab in fixed.net. These should be in the format 1.2.3.4.
  5. On the Backups tab, under Database Backups, click Configure Database Backups. Then enter the following:
    • The hostname is again yourdomain.com (whatever your domain name is)
    • The database username and password are the ones you entered.
    • Enter the name of the database
    • The port should be 3306.
  6. Click submit.
